Nepali Folk Dances

 


MARUNI

 It is one of the oldest and popular group dance form of the Nepali community, usually performed by three male dancers and the three female dancers. The dancers are usually accompanied by a clown called “Dhatu waray”. Sometimes Maruni dances are performed to the accompaniment of the nine instrument orchestra known as “Nau-mati Baja”.



TAMANG SOLO

Tamang Solo is the traditional dance form of Tamangs, who belong to Nepali community. The dance is performed with the rhythmic musical instrument called Damphu.  Tamang Selo thus is also remarked as the “Damphu Dance”, which is performed with fun and enthusiasm, quick movement and rhythmic beat of the Damphu, making it extremely extraordinary and interesting.



DHAAN NAACH

Dhaan means “the raw and harvested paddy grains”. Dhaan Naach is a folk dance of Sikkim performed by the Nepalese community to celebrate the crop harvest, i.e., paddy. It is one of the oldest traditional and cultural heritage preserved and followed by the farming community, which is witnessing the enthusiastic participation of both young and old.

Lepcha Folk Dance : Chu Faat

 


Chu Faat is another significant folk dance performed in honor of Mount Kanchenjunga, including four 4 adjoining peaks Mt. Kabru, Mt. Pandim, Mt. Narshing, and Mt. Simbrum. These 5 major peaks are believed to be the storehouse of 5 hidden treasures like Minerals, Medicine, Food grains, Salt, and Sacred Books. The dancers carrying green bamboo leaves and butter lamps perform this ritualistic dance with the religious songs.



Literal meaning of Chu is Snowy Range, while that of Faat is Worship. This group folk dance is performed in the honour of Mount Khangchendzonga, the guardian deity of the Sikkimese people. The dancers while carrying butter lamps and green bamboo leaves perform a ritualistic dance by singing devotional songs



Chu faat is measured as the oldest folk dance of Sikkim belongs to Lepcha group. It is presented to pay respect the five peaks as Mt Nursing, Mt kabru,Mt pandim,Mt Kanchenjunga, and Mt Simbrum which are known as the protector of five natural resources such as medicine , salt , minerals ,food grains and sacred books . The performance of dance held according to the Tibetan calendar, that is fifteenth day of seventh month. 



The dancers dance on so many devotional songs and also carry green bamboo leaves and better lamps of their hands during their performance. Over the last few years this dance has been the great tourist attraction. One can witness amazing performances of dance any time of the year. One can find numerous monasteries of Sikkim and almost every monastery has performed its own annual festival where the performance of dance is mandatory .which allures all dance lovers towards itself.

Lepcha Folk Dance: ZO MAL LOK




 Lepchas are considered one of the oldest tribes in the world and they’re the original inhabitants of Sikkim, including Bhutias. They have their own culture, traditions, religious beliefs, and the language of their own, which is being preserved by then till today. Zo-Mal-Lok is a well-known folk dance of Lepchas, performed to signify the sowing, reaping, and harvesting of paddy.


I also tried my hand at the textile design of sikkim , it is very beautiful and i enjoyed Alot in creating it.

Sikkim and it's dance forms


First we will talk about Sikkim, 

Sikkim, the state of the multiracial has acclaimed the national and global appreciation for its indigenous heritage and traditions. The entire population of Sikkim can be divided into several ethnic groups. Each of these groups has a language, culture, heritage, traditions, and the dance forms of their own. The gaiety celebrations and festivities present a plethora of opportunities to witness the traditional folk dance of Sikkim.
